US 7 Knitting Needle Size
If you're only going to own one pair of needles, a US 7 (4.5mm) is a strong argument. It spans heavy DK and light worsted — covering more patterns than any other single size.

About US 7
US 7 has a small quirk worth knowing: it shares its number with UK 7. That's unusual — in most cases the US and UK numbers don't match at all because the two scales run in opposite directions. Here, at 4.5mm, they happen to land on the same number. Don't take this as a general rule though — UK 8 and US 8 are completely different needles.
The Japanese 9号 also happens to be exactly 4.5mm, so US 7 has a perfect Japanese equivalent too. It's a well-covered size across all four systems.
The DK/worsted crossover
4.5mm sits right between the typical DK needle (US 6 / 4.0mm) and the typical worsted needle (US 8 / 5.0mm). A lot of yarn labels suggest "US 7–8" for worsted and "US 6–7" for DK — US 7 is in both ranges. This is why it's such a useful size to have. When you're not sure whether a yarn will knit up as intended, swatching on a US 7 is often a good starting point.
What to Knit with US 7 Needles
Hats — US 7 is one of the most common hat needle sizes. It gives a slightly denser fabric than US 8, which is good for warmth.
Cardigans and jumpers — light worsted on US 7 produces a fabric with good structure and drape for adult garments.
Mittens and gloves — the stitch count is manageable and the fabric is warm without being too bulky for fingers.
Beginner projects — if US 8 feels a bit loose for you, US 7 is the next step down. Still big enough to see clearly, a little more control over the stitches.
