US 10 vs US 10.5 — Don't Mix Them Up
The US system has a half-size between 10 and 11 — US 10.5, which is 6.5mm. They're different needles, and patterns that call for one won't give you the right gauge on the other. If your pattern says US 10, check your needle is marked 6.0mm. If it says US 10.5, you want 6.5mm.
This half-size is unusual in the US scale — it only appears at size 10/10.5. Most other steps are whole numbers.
What to Knit with US 10 Needles
Chunky hats and cowls — fast to knit, warm to wear. A basic hat on US 10 circulars takes a couple of hours.
Bulky sweaters — quick project, substantial fabric. Good for simple, relaxed-fit designs rather than anything structured.
Scarves — chunky yarn on US 10 produces a thick, warm scarf relatively quickly. The fabric can be a bit heavy for long scarves, but works well for shorter cowl-style wraps.
Beginner blankets — bulky on US 10 is more manageable than super bulky on US 13+, and still knits up considerably faster than worsted.
